MVHR systems work by removing polluted air from ducted room which can run continuously, linked to intelligent sensors, and boosted when necessary, during high levels of humidity. As the air is extracted is passes through a heat exchanger which recovers the energy from the air.
The heat exchanger then transfers the heat energy to the supply air from outside before it is distributed to the ducted rooms providing a fresh, energy efficient environment.
The heat exchanger prevents any cross contamination between the stale and fresh.
Mechanical extract ventilation (MEV) systems constantly remove moisture-laden air from the kitchen and wet rooms, like toilets and bathrooms. This air is extract from a single outlet such as an external wall louvre or roof vent. As well as clearing polluted air, the system causes a drop in pressure within the property that draws fresh air in from windows and other areas of the home.
MEV systems can be linked to various switches or sensors that intelligently control the system ensuring it's operating when needed, and can also boost during high humidity level, when necessary like when taking a shower. These include humidistats, passive infrared motion (PIR) sensors and boost switches.
These systems are simple to install during new builds, major refurbishments, and existing homes.
MEV systems consist of main components, the background ventilators, such as window tricke vent, ducts from the extract areas to the fan system, and the fan that controls the air speed and exhausts the air to the outside.
The MEV fan unit is typically situated in a remote space, like the loft space, helping to hide the ducts and also reduce any unwanted noise within the home.
The MEV systems are designs to operate continuously, providing a constant low level of extraction, and can be boosted when necessary to provide high levels of extraction, such as during cooking, showering or bathing.
One of the major advantages of continuous MEV systems is that occupants don’t need to remember to switch the ventilation on or off when integrated with a control system.
The ductwork is routed throughout the building, so continuous MEV systems are most commonly found in new build dwellings, where this is design in from the start, as it is part of building regulations. However, these systems are often added to existing buildings during major refurbishments, where new ducts can be installed and current buildings regulations are required to be met.
